Picking Tunes for Your Run

Picking Tunes for Your Run
Running is a stunning example of physics and more specifically, momentum. Interestingly enough, progress in both running and life is determined by your management of potential and kinetic energy in order to maximize the benefits of momentum. Look up "momentum" in your favorite dictionary for a wonderful disruption to your day; it is truly fascinating stuff when put into context of a runner and the human body. However, disrupting a runner's momentum generally yields results that can be very unpleasant.

Converting one's potential into kinetic energy should not be disrupted by the ill-kept promises of technology. Although gadgets have promised more of this momentum, it is all too easy to focus on the technology instead of the core activity of running. The latest running technology--such as Apple's iPod Shuffle and Adidas/Sennheiser running headphones--have made the integration of tech easier than ever before. Even so, the disruption caused by flailing cables or tumbling earbuds disrupts focus and results in lost momentum. Fear not my fellow odometers...I will share with you some battle-tested, top-secret, G14 classified tips for mastering running technology; you have the ability to eliminate disruption and make your run as fun or focused as you desire.

Lets start with apparel and the old mantra that less is more. For many, the appeal of running is its minimalist roots. Along with swimming and wrestling, it is the simplest sport known to man. As you add shoes, braces, visors, wristbands, iPods, fanny-packs, pedometers, heart-rate monitors, headphones and sunglasses, you increase your resistance significantly. Some of this gear is required and that is OK but for most, consolidation works wonders for improving stride, focus and efficiency. Keep a gym-bag or milk-crate in your car trunk with items that are not essential to every run, but may be essential to a particular run. This lets you keep what you need near you at all times instead of on you. As your performance increases, the need for gizmos will wane and the fine tuned machine you are driving starts to work on its own clock. Seasoned runners know their pace without a glance at the watch or distance and you can get there too.

Once you have consolidated your gadget collection to what you need it is time to increase efficiency with your bio-mechanics. While your stride is as unique to you as your fingerprint, your gear, no matter how generic, should work with your form- not against it. Shoes with a spider-web of laces contribute to drag and present a hurdle at every step. Use shorter laces and double-knot to reduce free-hanging laces from flopping.

Many athletes, pro and amateur, run to stay in good shape. If you run, wear running-specific shorts. Period. The reduction in fabric and seam alignment make a world of difference. Basketball shorts or even mid-length trunks add resistance to every stride no matter how bad you want to hide your s...

The 3 Rivers Road Runners have been running strong in the Tri-Cities, Washington since the late 1970's. With the death of disco, we traded in our platform shoes for waffle trainers and hit the roads, trails, and the tracks. Over the years, club members have logged tens of thousands of miles. One of our distinguished members has run over 100 marathons! But the club isn't just for experienced runners- we welcome all who share our lifestyle of enjoying a good run. The 3 Rivers Road Runners are for runners of all shapes and sizes, from the veteran ultramarathoner to the beginner working towards that first 5 km fun run, and everyone in betweeThe primary goal of the 3 Rivers Road Runners is to promote running events in the Tri-Cities. Besides providing events for our members and the runners in the region, with our events we hope to attract new runners to the club that can benefit from the healthful, positive lifestyle gained through running. Thanks to all our runners and volunteers for a delightful event! Every year during the last couple of days (or weeks) before the race date, we pretty much decide that we're not going to do this again, but every year, once race day arrives, we change our minds and conclude that we definitely have to do it again next year. It is so much fun to host all you runners for the race and lunch afterwards, to hear a few of your stories, to see you all enjoying your well-earned rest and refreshment after your runs. Thanks all of you for participating in this year's Light at the End of the Tunnel Marathon. Before I wax too verbose, please note the Results of today's race are up already. Please let us know if you find any errors and we'll correct them. Meanwhile we've got some sleep to catch up on, so we're headed off to bed. More comments to follow soon.

Yakima River Canyon Marathon
March
Yakima, WA
dolphinmteam@earthlink.net
http://www.ontherunevents.com/yrcm
This point-to-point marathon course is exceptionally scenic as it offers spectacular views of the Yakima River Canyon. It starts on Canyon Road .2 mile south of the Berry Road intersection in Ellensburg, Washington. After two loops, it proceeds directly south to the canyon. There are two major hills and many curves as the course follows the Yakima River downstream on the asphalt surfaced highway. The long downhill just before the finish in rural Selah, Washington, near the canyon's mouth contributes to the net elevation loss of a few hundred feet as it brings the runners to the Yakima Valley orchard and ranch country.

The race features rolling terrain, ridge tops, northwest forest, several sections of technical trails, and of course several demanding climbs and challenging descents. Race numbers are limited to 400 of the toughest endurance athletes this country has to offer. Most competitors will be pleased just to complete the race distance. However, as an extra testament to supreme performance, at least $6,500 in prize money is offered, going three deep in each category.
