Picking Tunes for Your Run

Picking Tunes for Your Run
Running is a stunning example of physics and more specifically, momentum. Interestingly enough, progress in both running and life is determined by your management of potential and kinetic energy in order to maximize the benefits of momentum. Look up "momentum" in your favorite dictionary for a wonderful disruption to your day; it is truly fascinating stuff when put into context of a runner and the human body. However, disrupting a runner's momentum generally yields results that can be very unpleasant.

Converting one's potential into kinetic energy should not be disrupted by the ill-kept promises of technology. Although gadgets have promised more of this momentum, it is all too easy to focus on the technology instead of the core activity of running. The latest running technology--such as Apple's iPod Shuffle and Adidas/Sennheiser running headphones--have made the integration of tech easier than ever before. Even so, the disruption caused by flailing cables or tumbling earbuds disrupts focus and results in lost momentum. Fear not my fellow odometers...I will share with you some battle-tested, top-secret, G14 classified tips for mastering running technology; you have the ability to eliminate disruption and make your run as fun or focused as you desire.

Lets start with apparel and the old mantra that less is more. For many, the appeal of running is its minimalist roots. Along with swimming and wrestling, it is the simplest sport known to man. As you add shoes, braces, visors, wristbands, iPods, fanny-packs, pedometers, heart-rate monitors, headphones and sunglasses, you increase your resistance significantly. Some of this gear is required and that is OK but for most, consolidation works wonders for improving stride, focus and efficiency. Keep a gym-bag or milk-crate in your car trunk with items that are not essential to every run, but may be essential to a particular run. This lets you keep what you need near you at all times instead of on you. As your performance increases, the need for gizmos will wane and the fine tuned machine you are driving starts to work on its own clock. Seasoned runners know their pace without a glance at the watch or distance and you can get there too.

Once you have consolidated your gadget collection to what you need it is time to increase efficiency with your bio-mechanics. While your stride is as unique to you as your fingerprint, your gear, no matter how generic, should work with your form- not against it. Shoes with a spider-web of laces contribute to drag and present a hurdle at every step. Use shorter laces and double-knot to reduce free-hanging laces from flopping.

Many athletes, pro and amateur, run to stay in good shape. If you run, wear running-specific shorts. Period. The reduction in fabric and seam alignment make a world of difference. Basketball shorts or even mid-length trunks add resistance to every stride no matter how bad you want to hide your s...

North Country Trail Run
August
Manistee, MI
info@mirunning.com
http://northcountrytrailrun.mirunning.com/
The course is a well marked 25 mile loop. There is an additional 1.2 mile section for the marathon runners and now a new course for the half marathon runners. The trail is a single-track hiking trail with enough hills to make for a challenging race. There is no high altitude to contend with, no rocks to jump over, and no stream crossings to wade through, just a beautiful forest with a few roots to remind you you're not on pavement. Crews can attend to their runners at several points. We will provide specific driving directions the morning of the race.

Millions of years ago the Potawatomi Indians hunted and fished peacefully in an area which is now a public wilderness preserve. In the tribe there were five young gentle hooligans, inseparable friends, united by their love of running - in places where most wouldn't even try to walk. The five were destined from birth to run, perhaps due to the nickname bestowed upon them. The two young girls and three boys whose names, translated, were Endurance, Challenge, Stamina, Obsession and Endless Trail. The elders in the tribe gave the group its nickname, Dances with Dirt.

Even Marathon Great Chuck Engle gave the Old Farts Course some respect appreciating the EXTREME TOUGHNESS of Fallsburg's BRUTAL 2nd Half of the Race. Phenom Engle cruised through the first half in 1:29:20 en route to what looked like another sub 3:00 hour marathon and a new course record. The Chase Pack which included two time 1/2 marathon champ Robert Cook making his Fallsburg Marathon debut were in hot pursuit. Defending champ Gale Fischer of Battle Creek also entered the race in great shape prepared to defend his title. In the end Chuck Engle met and over came the challenge that is Fallsburg breaking the old course record by over five minutes. Gale Fishcer passed all but one running two minutes under his old record time and finished second. Turner and Geers also beat the heat and the old record in what was a great race. On the womens side Cindy Lewandowski from Sartell Minnesota ran away from a great field which included inaugural champ Nicole Mills of Chicago,Bergeron of Norton Shores, Yerkes of Indiana and the timeless Martha Irwin (age 50) from Grand Rapids. Lewandowski's time of 3:44:45sets the bar for the open and master's course records!

Good Boy Events is an event company based in the Metro-Ann Arbor, Michigan area. The concept of Good Boy comes from our passion for events and the reason we do events...so we can be home more often to take care of our animals. Thus, our Company was created. Our dogs have lived the dream for a long time; extended hikes, boating, swimming, "the today's specials", camping trips and so much more. However, not all animals are so lucky. So many animals are stuck in crates for life, are unloved, malnourished, homeless, and even euthanized. The goal with Good Boy Events is to produce professional, safe, big time events for all to enjoy. Partial proceeds will benefit Animal Shelters around the Great Lakes State plus Good Boy Events will also provide support to local High School sports teams, local church groups, Boy Scouts and food banks. We have donated over $180,000 cash, collected used clothing, used running shoes and countless non-perishables items during the past eight years for charity organizations across the country
