Brooks Green Silence $100

Brooks Green Silence $100
The Green Silence is Brooks’ first new racing shoe in a decade.

The shoe demonstrates that performance and sustainability are compatible; many of the components are made from recycled plastics and the shoe is built with water-based adhesives and uses soy-based inks. The new midsole geometry provides flexibility and cushioning, with just enough outersole for traction and durability. The upper is open mesh with a nicely cushioned tongue that opens only on the lateral side in order to provide extra medial support. The shoes have a unique appearance, as the contrasting red and yellow colors are transposed, so the shoes aren’t identical, and the midsole of the right is red, while the left is yellow. The curved shape favors the higher-arched feet, however the roomy forefoot may allow enough wiggle room for lowerarched feet to find an acceptable fit.

  • Sizes: men 4–12,13,14 (unisex)
  • Weight: 8.0 oz. (men’s 11)
  • Shape: semi-curved to curved
  • Fit: snug heel, wide forefoot For: medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics
  • Range: efficient runners - up to a marathon; heavy strikers - up to 20K or just beyond

Newton Gravitas=Gravity $175

Newton Gravitas=Gravity $175
Newton’s neutral trainer Gravitas=Gravity (Gravitas is Latin for gravity) has reached the second round, with some improvements. The upper continues with the same stretchy airmesh as before, but has altered the overlays to provide the saddle-like support with a bit more open forefoot.

The midsole features a denser foam throughout, both for durability and improved responsiveness. The heel has been slightly reshaped to aid in transition—yes, you’re expected to land on your midfoot or forefoot, but it takes some getting used to—as does the aforementioned reshaped heel. The outersole has a tougher rubber compound on the actuator lugs, blown rubber beneath the toes, and carbon rubber in the heel. Bottom line? The shoe has been upgraded, adding value to a well-designed, high-end shoe.

NEUTRAL PERFORMANCE

Sizes: Men 6.5–13,14; Women 5–12

Vasque Transistor FS $100

Vasque Transistor FS $100
Here Vasque takes a different approach to construction and improves performance in the process. Using a new, better-fitting last that’s contoured to represent the bottom of your feet (most other lasts are fairly flat-bottomed), the construction merges the Strobel board and innersole for the first time in a trail shoe.

Vasque’s Foot Sync uses its Integrated Custom Footbed over a Flux Foam Strobel board (similar to other EVA boards) to allow the midsole and upper to fit together a bit better. Since the fit elements are distributed between both the upper and the midsole, rather than all in the upper as in most shoes, the shoes fit a bit differently. Generally, medium- to high-arched feet will be best served here, but since it has good volume, it can accommodate a foot that’s bit on the fuller side, as well. A hollow space under heel gives the ride both a more responsive and stable feel. The tread has a grippy traction, the large zigzag lugs flexing well with the sole. For its performance, fit, and innovation, the Transistor FS earned our Best Trail Shoe award.

  • PERFORMANCE TRAIL

Enjoy an out-and-back relatively flat course (fewer than 500 feet of climbing and descending). You'll admire the beauty of the surrounding desert as you follow this paved run from Furnace Creek Ranch along Hwy. 190 through the heart of Death Valley National Park. The entire course is below sea level with fantastic vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges: the Panamints, the Funerals, the Cottonwoods, the Blacks and the Grapevines. Your immediate surroundings are the exotic flora and fauna found only on the desert floor. This is probably one of the most unique courses you could pick for your next race. The desert is beautiful this time of year with mild temperatures; lows range between 30 and 40 degrees and highs hit the low 70s. Consider this the most unique way to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The course is USATF certified. NOTE: After a 12-year history of taking place in early December, this event has been moved to this February date.

The San Francisco Marathon

San Francisco, CA

In 2001 the management team that had produced the Bay to Breakers for over 20 years resigned from that event to concentrate on building The San Francisco Marathon&trade as a crown jewel for the city. The desire was to create one of the most beautiful and challenging urban road race marathons in the United States offering an idyllic summer running event. The race would be built organically with the local runner in mind, the quintessential San Franciscan healthy outdoor-lover, the one that embodies the natural, sustainable, genuine beauty of the city itself. True to local style, The San Francisco Marathon values authenticity and took on this effort with a philosophy learned from its two decades of producing road races. In the spirit of the many entrepreneurial endeavors by individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area, the goal was to make the event sustainable on its own, to build its base focused on the very people that make up the event-the runners- instead of sponsoring-up with corporate logos that had proven to be unreliable in earlier efforts and for other events. The management team chose to take the long view and instead of courting large corporate sponsorships to underwrite the expenses, the team sought sponsors who will truly enhance the race, who will bring real value and benefit to every runner's experience during Marathon Weekend as well as throughout the year.

The first thought that came to mind at the 6 a.m. start of this year's Wyoming Marathon Races was "Gorillas in the Mist," except that we were Runners in the Mist. Our huddle of a hundred or so runners was shrouded in dense fog as we tried to make out the dirt road disappearing beyond the start line. While competitors talked and warmed up, the race starter asked for a moment of silence as he said a sort of runner's prayer. The prayer at the race start was a new twist for me, and I immediately liked the vibe surrounding this race. It seemed a fitting tribute to the Memorial Day weekend. The course started on a gently-sloping downhill, a welcome beginning to a long day ahead. Competitors comprised half-marathoners like myself, marathoners, and ultra-marathoners. This was a tough bunch. Lush greenery and gurgling streams cheered us on from the sides of the road, and a certain calm settled over the crowd as we found our respective rhythms under a quiet blanket of morning mist.

Avenue of the Giants Marathon
May
Eureka, CA
theave@theave.org
http://www.theave.org
The Ave has been called by no less of an authority than RUNNERS WORLD MAGAZINE one of the most beautiful courses in the country. The photo on the left gives a small glimpse of why this is so. The Marathon is a double out and back, as the course profile indicates; while the Half Marathon is a single out and back. Both start just beyond the Dyerville Bridge on Bull Creek Road and proceed 6.5 miles to the first turn around. The first mile is relatively flat, and within half a mile of the start, you will be running under a canopy of beautiful Redwoods. After the first mile, there are some sharp curves and fairly short hills. There is an open space and a sweeping curve at about the 4/9 mile mark. Then for the next mile or so, you enter arguably the most beautiful part of the course. The giant Redwoods close to the road look as though they were painted on a large canvass, the way they are perfectly arranged. At about five and a half miles, just beyond the Albee Creek Campground, you will enter an opening that continues to the first turn around. Don't worry about heat, however, for the temperature is usually still cool and part of the road is still shaded. The last mile plus is a gradual uphill with few curves. Turn around here, and retrace your steps.
